Abstract:

Avoiding high costs and complexity of cabling, wireless connectivity is gaining wide attention both from home and business environment. It is coming to a mutual conclusion that wireless connectivity as a last mile internet connectivity will replace structured cabling, however the current standard Wi-Fi IEEE 802.11 provides a solid platform for development and advancement in this field. Newer technology standard WIMAX IEEE 802.16 relatively covers issues of providing high bandwidth and long distance connectivity attributes. This research will cover the vulnerabilities and potential of IEEE 802.11 standards compared to wired LAN Standard 802.3 by IEEE. A brief insight of technologies alternative to IEEE standards will be mentioned.

Abstract:

The key to securing assets is identifying them first and then find how vulnerable they are. If one does not realise the vulnerability found in a network in context to network security, it is highly likely that the network system is to crash at some point of exposure to either a malicious intruder or a person having no illicit intentions at first is tempted to play around in a vulnerable network. A lot of measures are taken to secure a network to bring to a level close to indivisible, however there can be holes and flaws found in even the most secure systems. In order to find flaws and openness in systems security tools are developed that expose the vulnerabilities in a system and make administrators aware of the dangers there system can face. In this report we will be taking a ride in the shallow waters with Nessus – a vulnerability scanner developed by the Tenable Network Security.

Abstract:

Malicious programs are often mistaken for the common word of virus, whether it is a virus, a worm or even a Trojan. They all share some common characteristics that cause malicious activity resulting in disrupting or terminating a flow of processes in a computer or network system. This research essay will focus on a comparative analysis between viruses and worms to clarify how the two differ in characteristics and activities during their life cycle.

Abstract:

With all the advancement to consume resources, all sorts of methodologies are being adopted by big companies like Intel and AMD that are investing millions of dollars to come up with software that resides on their machines to bring out the most of them. Software giants like Microsoft took over Connectix Corporation to develop virtualization software for Windows and Macintosh systems. This led to EMC acquiring VM Ware whereas VERITAS acquired Ejascent all to develop Virtualization software. IBM being pioneer in virtualization thought of this in 60’s by bringing out their time sharing system concepts in M44 44X machine. If hardware companies make wise use of virtualization they can save quite a lot on the research and development of the machines they intend to bring out in future. With a widespread of this technology being adopted small servers are also relying on it. This report is being presented after a research conducted by the author to explain what virtualization is and why is it useful.

Abstract:

Using the concept of sockets, communication between hosts and processes within the same computer are allowed. Depending on the operating systems implementation, support can be provided that can enable different I/O devices and drivers to work together. All modern operating systems have some sort of implementation for a socket interface as socket interface has become one of the fundamental technologies underlying the Internet. If hardware manufacturers start supplying built-in codes for socket programming, communication between hosts will occur a lot faster then it occurs today as we all know hardware implementation is a lot efficient then software implementation. This report is presented after I conducted a research in order to investigate into socket programming and its applications.

Abstract:

Guaranteeing secure transmission between hosts across the internet is the main object of web security providers. It has come to mutual agreement by almost all professionals that SSH- Secure Shell Protocol is the absolute alternative to Telnet and protocols like Remote Shell (RSH), reason being weak host-based authentication and transmission of clear-text passwords over the internet by Telnet and vulnerability of spoofing attacks on RSH. The purpose of this paper is to explore the features of a secure protocol and present brief introduction to the techniques used to overcome security vulnerabilities by implementing protocols that use encryption like SSH.
